Imagine you are moving around in a place where you haven?t been before. What could be the next best thing to chatting to a local? It could be having your Android with Google?s new Field Trip app installed. Field Trip is your personal ?tour guide?. It works unobtrusively in the background ? senses your location, and offers information with pop-up notifications on local history, best places to eat, the local music scene, shops, or just places to have fun.
You could call it a hyper-local discovery tool that pops up with information about the place you are probably standing on. Field Trip is an interesting launch from Google because it gives annoying notifications a fresh twist. You can of course, select the information you would like it to display and give it access to your location data.
The Android app could help to cancel out the strangeness of visiting a new place. On the other hand it could help you discover familiar neighborhoods in entirely new ways. According to the app?s site, the information is collated from different sources like Thrillist, Food Network, Zagat, and Eater for eating joints; Sunset, Cool Hunting, WeHeart, Inhabitat, and Remodelista for shopping; Atlas Obscura and Daily Secret for local trivia; Songkick and Flavorpill for music.
Field Trip is U.S. only so far and if you are there, you can download it from the Google Play Store. An iOS app is expected soon. Take it for a spin.

Radio Receivers
We own a used Grundig Yacht Boy 400 and recommend it highly. These were made in the 1990s, but are still ?state-of-the-art?. The CCI radio company sells a clone of this model today. Good used Grundigs can be found on ebay in the $50 to $100 range. The YB400 has some great features:
We consider it the best AM portable receiver made. At night we can listen Coast to Coast A.M. on stations from Los Angeles CA, San Antonino TX, Omaha NE, or Denver CO and even Detroit MI and Chicago IL at times, all sounding clear from here in New Mexico.
Our Yacht Boy 400 receives from 55 Kilohertz through 30 Megahertz, covering the entire HF (high frequency) band. In a time of crisis, shortwave may be the only radio signal out there. It may come in real handy when we can?t depend on the Internet to know what is going on.
WWV is the international time standard hack that can be found on the following shortwave frequencies:
WWV also allows you to check space weather as well as satellite environment (interference). We can use these frequencies to gauge the effect of solar activities on our radio communications. WWV has a very strong signal. For most it will be received as a strong S 8 to 10 signal strength. But in the event of adverse solar activities even these stations can become covered up with static and noise. So if you are trying to receive a certain station and are having difficulties, check WWV to see if their signal is coming though alright, or if it is covered up with static. In that case, the sun is most likely the cause of your problems or (an EMP blast).
?
Communications Radios
?Family Radio Service? (FRS) and ?Business Radio Service? (BRS) are the frequencies for the common walkie-talkies you see. They often say that they have an 8 mile range, however, most of these radios have a hard time transmitting further than 2 miles. Not everyone lives in a laboratory environment. The 8 mile range estimates take into account ?line of sight? factors only. If you can see the other party that you are trying to communicate with, you can talk to them. We don?t live in a flat world without a horizon and without trees, buildings, mountains, etc. Because of this, these radios are over rated and can only be used for close-up communications (typically less than 3 miles at best).
They certainly can be useful if your community uses them in a small area (40 acres or less).
The Business Radio Service does include base radios, which have more power than family radios. You can add an external antenna on a mast high above the ground to stretch their effectivity (up to 10 miles).
?
Scanners
The I-Com IC-R5 pocket scanner is a handy radio to own. These are available in US models and overseas models. The FCC gave the I-COM company a license to sell this receiver in the U.S. ONLY IF CERTAIN FREQUENCIES WERE BLOCKED OUT!
With this in mind the best place to buy one is on Ebay. There are sellers on ebay from other countries such as Japan who sell UNBLOCKED IC-R5?s and IC-R7?s. These ebay listings will be explicit. It will say it is a Japanese model and does not have any blocked frequencies. The IC-R5 can scan from 30 kilocycles to 1400 megahertz (1.4 Gigahertz). Within these frequencies are the following things you may find interesting to listen to.
For entertainment purposes only, here are some of the stations you can listen to that are hard to find frequencies:
To find local frequencies, check out http://www.radioreference.com/
Emergency Action Messages are the encoded radio traffic between NORAD and SAC with the nuclear bomber fleet, like in the movie?Fail Safe.
With Fusion Centers operating, the radio traffic is mostly digitized and scrambled. But you will notice that when they are ?working together? the scanner?s frequencies will all seem to light up at the same time. By this I mean you?ll notice you local sheriff/state police/ local cops/ FEMA/DHS/Border Patrol/FBI, etc., all going encrypted and all talking at the same time.
The Fusion Centers work with the local authorities, so when you hear this it usually means that there is a VIPER team closing down some road to perform unwarranted stops and searches under the guise of (take your pick) sobriety check points, looking for seatbelt terrorists, looking for insurance terrorists, etc.
If the local VIPERS are not encrypted, you will hear things like the officer waiting for a ?29 check?. This means they are checking to see if there are any outstanding warrants for that driver. When you hear this you will also hear things like ?we?re set up at mile maker __?. If you don?t want to have to claim your right under the 4th?amendment with these VIPER TERRORISTS, then stay away.
Suffice to say that if you hear a lot of cross agency traffic, it?s nearly a sure bet that a VIPER team is out making sure that the country is safe for their brand of freedom.
Creating a Radio Round Robin: With the right equipment a group of people could create a a ?radio round robin?. this is when a group of people has a specific place on the radio to meet on a regular basis. For example, let?s say there are 6 people in your round robin and you all decide to meet on Saturday mornings on CB channel 40, 27.405 Mhtz, LSB (lower side band) (or CW for RTTY ? look for an upcoming article on that!) and exchange news with each other. It?s not a question of ?IF? TPTB will shut the internet down it?s ?WHEN?? The purpose of these articles it to create awareness in becoming independent of the internet and become your own beacon of news by maintaining contact through the coming difficulties. Having a group of people from diverse places is also important. Then one of the round robin group can relay a message from one station who can?t be heard to a station that can? maintain contact with both stations.
Coming up in Part 3???More on RTTY,? Round Robins and Slow-Scan TV.

BANGKOK (AP) ? The "Gangnam Style" craze has reached Thailand's navy, which is among the latest to mimic the globally popular dance video.
In a video posted to YouTube, a few dozen smiling sailors from the Third Naval Area Command perform the rodeo-style dance and other hip-shaking moves at their base on the popular tourist island of Phuket.
Lt. Cmdr. Patiroop Khemtis said Friday officers took three days to film and edit the video, instructing participants to mimic the moves in the original video by South Korean singer PSY. It was shown at the base's annual party Wednesday and posted to YouTube the next day.
The video shows white-uniformed sailors in sunglasses galloping through their offices and officers in scuba gear shimmying up the beach.
The original "Gangnam Style" video had close to 300 million YouTube views as of Friday.

Ivan Velazquez Caballero, known as "El Taliban."
By Reuters
MEXICO CITY - The Mexican navy said on Wednesday it had captured one of the leaders of the Zetas drug cartel, a notoriously brutal gang reported to be breaking apart due to an internal feud.
The navy said it had caught the man it believed to be Zetas boss Ivan Velazquez in the central state of San Luis Potosi, in a boost to outgoing President Felipe Calderon's efforts to crack down on the violent cartels.
The Zetas have perpetrated some of the most sickening acts of Mexico's drug war and continued to expand even as rival gangs joined forces against them. They are now regarded as one of the two most powerful drug cartels in the country.
Velazquez is due to be paraded before the media on Thursday morning as is customary with such captures in Mexico.
Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion
132 inmates tunnel out of Mexico prison near US border
The suspected gang leader surrendered to the navy in the city of San Luis Potosi without a shot being fired, an eyewitness told Reuters.
Known as "Z-50" or "El Taliban," Velazquez has been one of the leading figures in the Zetas. Formed by a group of army deserters in the late 1990s, the gang acted as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel before splitting with their employers in 2010.
Longstanding rivalry between the Zetas' top leader, Heriberto Lazcano, and his second-in-command Miguel Trevino has exploded into violence, raising fears the hostilities could bring a fresh wave of bloodletting.
President: Mexico gang-related deaths fall by 15 percent in 2012
Switched allegiance
The Zetas boast 10,000-plus gunmen, and the prospect of them fighting for control of local trafficking networks and smuggling routes has alarmed security experts.
However, the split also brings benefits for the government, as members of the gang inform against former colleagues.
A video "mockumentary" that shows children as kidnappers, corrupt cops and drug traffickers sparked a fierce debate in violence-torn Mexico. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.
Earlier this week, Mexican news magazine Proceso reported that Velazquez had switched his allegiance to the Gulf Cartel due to a rupture with Trevino, citing messages posted online.
Velazquez is listed by the government as one of the country's most-wanted drug kingpins. The Mexican government has offered a reward of up to 30 million pesos ($2.34 million) for information leading to his arrest.
Debate rages over Mexico 'spillover violence' in US
Since 2009, more than 20 drug lords have been caught or killed. The most recent capture came two weeks ago, when the navy arrested Gulf Cartel head Jorge Costilla, alias "El Coss."
Earlier on Wednesday, the navy announced the capture of 18 suspected Zetas in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.
Mexico's drug war: No sign of 'light at the end of the tunnel'
How to contain the threat posed by the drug gangs is one of the main challenges facing Calderon's successor Enrique Pena Nieto, who is due to take office on December 1.
About 60,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence during Calderon's six-year term.

As Mitt Romney?s standing in the polls slips, questions are emerging about whether the Republican presidential nominee may become a drag for the GOP down ticket.
Romney has plenty of time?and three nationally televised debates?during which he could recover. But on Wednesday, President Obama touched the 50 percent mark in Gallup?s tracking poll, holding a 50-44 percent advantage over Romney. A pair of Quinnipac/New York Times surveys showed the president with a 9-point lead in Florida and a 10-point advantage in Ohio. And polls last week had Obama opening a lead in Virginia as well.
Romney?s performance atop the ticket is critical for Republican chances of seizing control of the Senate. Some of the most competitive contests?in Nevada, Wisconsin, and Virginia, ?are in presidential battleground states. And even in states expected to vote solidly Republican in the presidential contest, such as North Dakota and Montana,?Republicans are counting on Romney to run up the score to put seats out of reach for the Democrats.
But this week, conservative Weekly Standard columnist Bill Kristol, citing generic party figures, floated the possibility of the GOP losing the House?an idea largely dismissed as fantasy talk in the political establishment. ?Based on current polling, I don't think one can say that it's now out of the question,? he wrote.?
Kristol?s piece may have been more motivational tactic than mathematical analysis. The Cook Political Report rates 228 House seats as solidly Republican, likely Republican, or leaning Republican. The GOP needs only 218 to maintain the majority.
Put another way, Democrats could win all of the seats that lean their direction plus sweep the 24 most-competitive races in the country and still fall well short of the majority. To take control?or, as Kristol put it, ?wake up on the morning of November 7 to the prospect of ... Speaker Nancy Pelosi??the Democrats would have to win all the races that lean their way (16) all Toss-Ups (24), and nearly two-thirds of GOP-leaning districts (11 of 17).
?It?s likely we?ll keep the House,? said Ron Bonjean, a GOP strategist and former spokesman for ex-Speaker Dennis Hastert. But he said that Kristol?s musings served an important purpose. ?This is sounding the alarm bell.?
Romney?s slipping support is a timely reminder for House Republicans?including many freshmen who won in 2010 simply by being not an ?Obama Democrat??that the 2012 landscape is more complex, especially if Romney?s numbers continue to erode.?
House Republican leaders huddled with rank-and-file members earlier this month to offer, as Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., the chief deputy whip, described it, ?a word of caution.??
?You want to make sure if you?re a member that you?re paying attention and not underestimating anybody on the ballot running against you,? Roskam said.
If Romney does not bounce back, that could complicate some lawmakers? reelection prospects, however.
Take Rep. Robert Dold of Illinois, who is already running in an overwhelmingly Democratic district. Every vote that Romney cedes to Obama is an additional crossover vote that Dold, who supports abortion rights, will need if he is to become a sophomore member.?
If Romney?s numbers continue to sag, a key question is whether the donor community will jettison him for vulnerable congressional candidates such as Dold.
As far back as six months ago, conservative elites floated the idea of abandoning the GOP presidential ticket to focus on controlling Congress. Columnist George Will suggested it, even before Romney had formally seized the nomination. ?Conservatives this year should have as their primary goal making sure Republicans wield all the gavels in Congress in 2013,? he wrote in March.
The idea never took hold. And the outside groups that have been pounding Obama on the airwaves, led by the Karl Rove-backed American Crossroads and Crossroad GPS, show no sign of abandoning their nominee.?
?We see Romney tied or within the margin in virtually all of the states he needs in order to win, and we?ll have our pedal to the metal on the presidential all the way through the end,? said Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio. The one-time National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman added that Crossroads? internal polling contradicted the recent public surveys.?
Whatever the actual figures, Bonjean said, ?There are many Republicans across the country that are looking at Mitt Romney?s poll numbers and realizing they may not get the tailwind they?re looking for.?

Over the past few weeks, I?ve been working as the managing editor of a new Bible for those who are dealing with grief. As the author of three books on caregiving who has taken care of terminally ill loved ones in my home, I?ve wrestled with questions about death and dying.
About twelve years ago, I lost my ability to walk, see, stand, or care for myself. Doctors found a golfball-sized lesion in my brain near my brain stem. In forty-eight hours, my life turned upside-down, and I was suddenly faced with the possibilities of long-term care and terminal illness.
In the following video, Dennis has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. He has just months to live. He?s faced with the hardest question of all: how to invest the time he has left. CLICK TO SEE VIDEO
For me the answer to that question involved investing my experiences for eternal benefits. During one long hospital night, I told God that if he chose to bless me with more time on earth, I?d tell as many people as possible about him by using the gifts of writing and speaking that he?d given me. Since then, he?s allowed me the blessing of co-founding two writers? conferences, writing seven books and contributing to or ghosting others. He?s blessed me with the opportunity to speak to thousands of people across the nation and bring truth through the power of story.
What about you? How would you respond if you learned you had just a short time left to live? What relationships would you wish you?d repaired? What words would you wish you?d spoken? What dream would you ?wish you?d pursued? What time and talents would you wish you?d invested?
Today, think about what you can do?now?that will create a legacy that will not only change lives now, but echo into eternity.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Barnes & Noble Inc's first hi-definition tablets, unveiled on Wednesday, were well received by analysts who said the devices keep the bookseller in the fight with Amazon.com Inc, Apple Inc and Google Inc - for now.
The largest U.S. bookstore chain introduced a $199 7-inch Nook HD tablet that will go up against similar, recently launched products by Google and Amazon.com this holiday season.
The company also unveiled a $269 9-inch Nook HD+ tablet that will compete with the Apple iPad.
"The devices are in improvement in important ways over the previous generations of the Nook, and they one-up Amazon in some areas," Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps told Reuters.
While the new products, thinner and lighter than their rivals, come a few months after Microsoft said it would invest $605 million over five years in Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader and college business, the bookstore chain still faces a daunting task.
"Barnes & Noble is the smallest player trying to do the software and the hardware development, and they don't have the financial means beyond what Microsoft has already fronted them to keep up in the arms race," said Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom.
Barnes & Noble staked its future on success in the growing e-books industry as the face of declining sales of physical books that led to last year's bankruptcy of the Borders bookstore chain.
In many ways, Barnes & Noble, which operates nearly 700 stores, has defied expectations. It beat Amazon to the marketplace with touchscreen devices and a color reader in recent years, and won plaudits from reviewers this year for its glow-in-the-dark Nook that allows someone to read with the lights off so as not to disturb others.
Since the chain launched its first Nook device, a basic e-reader, in 2009, it has won as much as 30 percent of the U.S. e-books market. Amazon is the leader with about 60 percent.
This race has proven expensive and, so far, unprofitable. The battle with Amazon is taking a toll. Barnes & Noble reported lower Nook sales last quarter, after earlier quarters of torrid growth, hurt by price cuts to fight Amazon's aggressive pricing.
"Barnes & Noble must continue to invest to introduce new products with enhanced features at prices that are the same as or lower than older, less-sophisticated devices," Barclays Capital analyst Alan Rifkin wrote in a research note. The problem is that hurts profits and margins, he said.
But the company's chief said the Nook devices are essential to helping it generate sales of digital content.
"We're growing the digital content portion of the business, and that's where we envision making our economics," Barnes & Noble William Lynch told Reuters at a media event on Tuesday.
Shares of Barnes & Noble rose 5 percent to $12.87 in afternoon New York Stock Exchange trading.
BRUISING PRICE WARS
The tablet market is among the fastest-growing sectors of the technology industry. Research firm Gartner forecasts that sales will almost double this year, to 118.9 million units.
Barnes & Noble is in some ways at a disadvantage. Amazon can use its Prime shipping service and amazon.com site to draw users to its Kindle tablets, and Apple, which has sold tens of millions of iPads, and has an indisputable "cool" factor.
So Barnes & Noble needs to focus on its natural customer: the reader that comes to its stores to buy books.
"A key growth area is to get their existing customer base onto the digital platform," Forrester's Epps said, adding that the new devices would help.
For these new devices, Barnes & Noble added features that allows each member in a family to share a Nook tablet, becoming the first tablet to let each user create a home page and customize preferences.
There are also parental controls that can prevent kids from adult content or going shopping.
The company hopes a new video-streaming and download service for Nook will help narrow the gap with Amazon and Apple, which offer more content on their devices.
Barnes & Noble emphasized features such as image resolution and page-turning technology given the needs of its basic customers, book and magazine readers.
"We are playing in the tablet space, but reading is at our core," Lynch said.
The 7-inch tablet weighs 11.1 ounces. Its larger sibling is 18.2 ounces, making it lighter than the iPad and making them both more appropriate for reading, he added. The iPad weighs about 23 ounces.
Barnes & Noble's new devices, available for pre-order on Wednesday, will ship in October and be in U.S. stores in November. They will be on sale in Britain beginning in late November at chains including Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

Sunday marked the first time Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees all lost on the same day.
ANALYSIS
By Scott Kacsmar
NBCSports.com contributor
updated 10:36 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2012
Despite scoring being as high as ever ? the average game has produced 47.6 points ? something is not right with the 2012 NFL season. It is not just the replacement referees either, though they have been a big factor.
Taking a look at the season's statistical quarterback leaders, you see a lot of the usual suspects in the top 10: the demoted Kevin Kolb, second-year players Andy Dalton and Christian Ponder, rookie Robert Griffin III, and the Harbaugh brothers? fearless leaders Alex Smith and Joe Flacco.
Wait. Is that a list of preseason leaders? Surely it cannot be the real thing? But it is. The quarterbacks we have expected elite performance from based on years of past success are not leading their teams to wins so far.
On Sunday, for the first time ever, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger all lost.
These four future Hall of Fame quarterbacks that we have grown accustomed to seeing wins are a combined 3-9 this season. That is as many wins as Kolb has contributed to the undefeated Cardinals. On Monday night, Aaron Rodgers also lost to join the 1-2 club.
It all adds up to a very awkward season in progress, one that lacks a dominant team or elite offense led by a star quarterback. Should this continue, you would have to go back a solid decade (2000-2002 era) to find a similar season.
What are the chances they all would lose in the same week?
That fact of the week may not be as impressive as it sounds when you consider one of these four quarterbacks is usually on a quest to perfection late into the season, or missed an entire season with injury (Tom Brady in 2008; Peyton Manning in 2011).
But Sunday marked the 73rd time all four played in the same NFL week, and the first time they went 0-4. It was the 58th time they all played without playing each other, so the real number to admire is one 0-4 week in 58 opportunities.
Maybe even just as crazy is that Week 2 was the first time they combined to go 1-3; their first losing week ever. The last time all four of their teams, with or without them starting, lost in the same week was another Week 3, back in the 2008 season. That day Rodgers also suffered his first loss as a starter against Dallas.
The 2004 season makes for a good bookmark in NFL history, as it was the year a lot of history-shaping events happened at the quarterback position.
Here is the breakdown of how the four have done in the 73 weeks they all played (since 2004).
|
That season was when Manning took his game to an unprecedented level with 49 touchdown passes and a 121.1 passer rating. Brady had a breakout year statistically and won his third Super Bowl in four seasons. Brees finally rewarded San Diego with a career season to start an eight-year run of dominant play. Roethlisberger rewrote both the record books and expectations as the Steelers' rookie quarterback.
With respect to Rodgers and Eli Manning, these four have been the NFL?s gold standard at quarterback the last eight years, as no one else has the long track record of both individual and team success. Either Brady, Manning or Roethlisberger has represented the AFC in the Super Bowl in nine straight seasons. Losing streaks are not common for these four, but historic winning streaks are.
Roethlisberger became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a 13-0 record in the regular season, and he did it as a rookie in 2004. Peyton Manning did the same a year later; starting 13-0 with the 2005 Indianapolis Colts (finished 14-2). Brady achieved the only 16-0 regular season in NFL history with the 2007 New England Patriots. While Manning did it again in 2009 with a 14-0 start, Brees was right there with a 13-0 start for the New Orleans Saints (finished 13-3), which would lead to a Saints? Super Bowl victory.
Rodgers became the fifth quarterback to post a 13-0 regular season record last year (finished 14-1). Currently, Rodgers is suffering the greatest scoring drought of his career. Excluding return scores, the Packers have been held to 12, 16 and 16 points in their three games this season. They also scored only 20 points in their playoff loss to the Giants, putting Rodgers at 1-3 in his last four starts.
Since the other four quarterbacks ended their last season (2010 for Manning) with a playoff loss as well, you have some really bad records in the last few games.
What is going wrong this season?
Each of the four quarterbacks has faced a different situation that has led to their losing start.
Manning has likely faced the toughest start of the four quarterbacks. Not only has he had to deal with adjusting to a whole new team, but there is the physical recovery from the neck surgeries, and it is debatable just how healthy Manning is at this point.
On the field, the Broncos won a thrilling game over Pittsburgh in Week 1, but have dropped consecutive games to two 3-0 teams in Atlanta and Houston. After trailing by 20 points in the fourth quarter of each, Manning led a late rally, but the defense was unable to get the ball back for a legit opportunity at a winning touchdown.
The Broncos are a work in progress, but more rehab to get healthier and better timing with his receivers could help Manning get back to his usual standards. He had a slow start before, recovering after injury in 2008 that led to a 3-4 start before reeling off nine straight wins.
When you consider the 40-point scoring differential the Falcons and Texans each had in their other two wins this season, Denver?s 1-2 record with a pair of six-point losses does not look as bad. However, the schedule is still filled with challenges.
Brady could be sitting at 3-0 had field-goal attempts gone a little differently at the end of the game the last two weeks. First it was New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski missing on a 42-yard attempt that would have beat Arizona in Week 2, but he was wide left. It was the first failed clutch field goal in a loss for the Patriots since Dec. 26, 1999.
This time it was a blown 9-point lead in Baltimore in the fourth quarter. Brady was unsuccessful on the Patriots? last two drives, while the Ravens drove for the game-winning score. Rookie kicker Justin Tucker did not pull a Billy Cundiff this time, but he did barely make the 27-yard field goal with no time left.
Brady is trying to adjust to life without tight end Aaron Hernandez for the time being, and implementing vertical receiver Brandon Lloyd into an offense that's not known to stretch the field. Brady has been sacked seven times, and is on pace for his highest sack total since his first year as starter (41 times in 2001). The added pressure may explain why Brady has not looked as sharp this season.
The best news for New England is that they still play in the AFC East, and are the best team in the division. They have a good shot to notch a win over Buffalo this week, and now the New York Jets will be without Darrelle Revis the rest of the season. This is still New England?s division, even if they are under .500 for the first time in 145 games, snapping that impressive NFL record.
Brees is in a world of trouble at 0-3, and not playing like the prolific quarterback we are so used to seeing in New Orleans since 2006. While the suspension of head coach Sean Payton is a real problem, there is no excuse for Brees to rank 26th in completion percentage (54.7 percent), 27th in yards per attempt (6.60), and 25th in passer rating (77.0).
Brees should be able to wear a blindfold and still hit 60 percent of his passes in this offense, which he knows so well. New Orleans has major problems defensively, but the offense has not met its standard in any of the three games.
Brees struggled against a Washington defense that has been shredded by Sam Bradford and Andy Dalton. He threw a poor interception when he had a chance to tie the game late, and had a rookie-esque pick six against Carolina that contributed to the Week 2 loss.

Staying alive in search engines is becoming harder for content that is older than 90 days according to the Internet Marketing for Beginners website. Companies can develop attractive websites that utilize modern applications and still fail to produce content that is worthy of search engine indexing. Google has changed its approach to indexing content by integrating a Pagerank formula. This formula is an internal numbering system that Google applies to websites in an effort to judge the importance of content that is distributed from a website.
One of the methods that Marketer?s Black Book experts plan to teach at the November 9th live event in Jacksonville, FL is how to create and supply informative content that search engines will approve for pennies on the dollar.

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Army officer who once taught that the U.S. ought to consider ?Hiroshima tactics? for a ?total war? on Islam has put America?s top general on notice for a possible lawsuit.?Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley is?accusing the government of concealing ?the truth about Islam? at a time when proponents of his view of an inevitable clash between Islam and the West have succeeded at fanning precisely those flames.
On Thursday, attorneys for Dooley told Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff?Gen. Martin Dempsey that Dooley is considering ?a potential civil action,? said Marine Col. David Lapan, a spokesman for Dempsey. The written notice does not indicate that they?ve actually filed a lawsuit against Dempsey.
But Dooley?s lawyers, who have defended one of the most prominent anti-Islam voices in the United States, aren?t just flirting with legal action against the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. They?re launching a PR strike as well. A press release announcing that Dooley has retained them accuses Dempsey of compromising ?the final bastion of America?s defense against Islamic jihad and sharia, the Pentagon? to ?the enemy.? And it?s language that comes as Americans worry about Islamic radicals targeting U.S. embassies in the Middle East.
As Danger Room first reported in April,?Dempsey shut down an elective course?Dooley taught at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, which is under the auspices of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The course instructed senior officers at the lieutenant colonel, commander, colonel and Navy captain level that ?there is no such thing as ?moderate Islam,?? and that wartime protections against civilians of Islamic countries were ?no longer relevant.?

Carlsbad hires lobbyist at $15,000 a month to find new projects
After 13 years of operating safely and in obscurity, New Mexico?s underground repository for transuranic radioactive waste is nudging back into headlines.
A highway project by the state proposes to temporarily change the route of loaded trucks traveling from the north to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad.
The planned road reconstruction, still a month from being voted on by the New Mexico Transportation Commission, has cast renewed attention on WIPP. But that project is nothing compared to the ideas of Carlsbad-area politicians, who want to build their region?s employment base by establishing even deeper ties to the nuclear-disposal industry.
?WIPP is one of the greatest unsung success stories around, a project with a perfect safety record and more of a game changer for our economy than even oil and gas,? said Eddy County Commissioner Jack Volpato, a Republican. ?I see it or maybe something else like it creating a whole new generation of jobs.?
In particular, Volpato said, Carlsbad and Eddy County will push for a federal study to determine if a second repository similar to WIPP could safely bury high-level nuclear waste from defense projects.
Such an endeavor would maintain or add well-paying jobs in the Carlsbad area. It also would solve an environmental problem for the country, Volpato said.
The idea of taking nuclear waste from the rest of America and salting it away under the desert is not radical thinking in Carlsbad, which has been a neighbor to WIPP since 1999. For many people, nuclear-waste disposal is pure business now, not a cause for worry.
?I was a skeptic when WIPP came here. Then I educated myself and I have become entirely comfortable with it,? Volpato said.
The county commissioners and the Carlsbad City Council recently voted to hire a Washington lobbying firm at a cost of $15,000 a month to pursue more business opportunities in radioactive disposal, said City Administrator Jon Tully.
Two commissioners and two council members dissented, but the area is moving ahead to market itself as a safe place to deposit nuclear waste.
Tully said the duties of the lobbying company, the C2 Group, would be narrowly focused on nuclear research and projects that could create jobs for Carlsbad.
These could include interim storage of certain wastes, expansion of WIPP?s mission in burying transuranic waste and perhaps other undertakings to help in nuclear clean-ups. ?
Under the federal law that created WIPP, the repository can only accept transuranic waste from government sites that had a defense mission. These included operations in eight states, notably Los Alamos in New Mexico, Rocky Flats in Colorado and the Savannah River site in South Carolina.
Last year, U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce introduced a bill to expand WIPP?s mission, saying about 200 good jobs would be in jeopardy if nothing was changed.
Pearce proposed that WIPP be allowed to accept government-owned transuranic waste not related to defense missions. One example of this is the West Valley site south of Buffalo, N.Y. It was a commercial venture used as a nuclear fuel reprocessing center.
Just like the ongoing shipments from defense sites, this waste could be trucked to WIPP and deposited in ancient salt beds 2,150 feet below the earth's surface.
Volpato said such concepts for sustaining WIPP while cleaning up environmental messes remain possible. But the area?s lobbying effort also could seek other types of business, perhaps eventually the high-level nuclear waste from defense operations.
?People seem to have heard of Yucca Mountain but not about us,? Volpato said of the defunded Nevada repository.
The oncoming nuclear campaign by Carlsbad and Eddy County probably will re-ignite opponents of WIPP, Volpato said. His bet is that most people can be won over, provided that the scientific research shows a new nuclear mission can be handled as safely and efficiently as WIPP has been.
As for the state highway project, Tully said city officials still had questions about the plan but expect to resolve them in meetings with the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
Gary Shubert, the engineer for NMDOT?s division in southeastern New Mexico, said the state needs to improve the base of New Mexico 200, a designated WIPP route. Shubert described it as a two-lane road with the peaks and valleys of a roller coaster.
The state proposes to close a portion of it next year. That means an estimated 560 transuranic waste shipments to WIPP would take an alternate route in the Carlsbad area.
Trucks would depart from U.S. 285 southbound at New Mexico 524. Then they would go east to Canyon Street before continuing onto U.S. 62/180.
Shubert said this route is about a half-mile longer than the existing path to WIPP.
