Aerobics Cardio: Cardio Training - A Crucial Aspect of Fitness

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic training 5 times a week, or high intensity cardio 3 times a week for optimal health. Cardio training benefits us by reducing the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer and strengthening the heart and lungs. It also reduces stress, gives us more energy and helps us sleep better. Lastly, it can help us with our weight loss goals. It's obvious that it is something with which everyone should be engaged.

The forms of cardio exercise available to us are as numerous as the benefits we derive from performing the exercise. The primary equipment necessary is generally a good pair of walking or running shoes and some comfortable workout clothing. Once you have these the next step is to choose which form of exercise you would most enjoy.

Walking is the most convenient and generally widely recommended exercise. It involves no costs, except those sustained for shoes and clothing (you were going to spend the money on that anyway), it can be done anywhere, at anytime of the day. About 15 minutes of walking burns 100 calories, so it's definitely a viable means to aid in weight loss efforts. The key here, as with all forms of cardio, is to get your heart rate up. You should be walking at a pace that causes you to expend effort, to sweat a little, but you don't need to walk so fast that you feel you will keel over.

If you are more ambitious, you can try running for your workout. It's vitally important to have a good pair of shoes when running. You shouldn't wear a pair of shoes designed for basketball players or baseball players because this can cause havoc on the feet and knees over a period of time. Even the wrong pair of running shoes can these problems. With this in mind, when you go to buy a pair of shoes, ask the salesperson for assistance and walk around the store with the shoes on. Make sure your toes aren't squeezed and that there is adequate arch support. After you have taken care of these factors, you can begin with your workouts. If you are just starting out and find that running continuously is too strenuous, alternate walking and running. If you are working out 3 times a week, the first week try running for a minute and walking for a minute. As time goes on you can increase the time you are running, until you are running for 30 minutes at a time.

Swimming is a fantastic workout. It's a total body workout and it's low impact. This is the recommended exercise for people who suffer from arthritis. Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints of the body, causing sufferers great pain. High impact aerobics can aggravate that pain. Swimming burns an average of 400 calories per hours (more or less depending on weight and stroke used), so in addition to cardiovascular conditioning, it's also a great tool to use in any weight loss program.

Elliptical trainers are also very popular. They give a combination of upper and lower body workout. It is said that the trainer is a combination of running and riding a bicycle. There are different types of workouts that can be done as well. Cardio, Manual, Interval Training. This variety helps so you won't get bored with the same old routine. This low impact exercise can easily be done 5 times a week, with great results.

Like to dance? Have no fear. Zumba is another aerobic workout, where you can dance your way to fitness. You can join a gym and enroll in the classes, or buy a home DVD. DVDs are great in that they have progressive workouts, you can do it in the comfort of your home and you just pay one time for the DVD.

Every workout should begin and end with a good stretch. At the beginning of a workout it's important to prepare the for the work that is about to be done. It's equally important to end the exercise in the same way. Stretching helps keep muscles, tendons and ligaments pliable so injury can be avoided.

Motherhood a Universal Word | Shootie Girl

She wore a little green dress with bright eyes, and tiny little hands and? feet. Five month old Baby Harriett didn?t realize that today was a special day. One that would save her life!

A small group of three Shot@Life Champion were given the privilege of following a family?s journey. Young grandmother Rosemary and her son Brian allowed us into their home in the Kabarole Village of Uganda to observe what a typical Sunday looks like for them. We entered their home on a short dirt road where a sheet functioned as the front door. We were graciously welcomed into a neat and tiny living room with dirt floors. We were greeted by the entire family: Grandmother Rosemary, age 35, primary caretaker of Baby Harriett along with her son Brian, age 21, who is Harriett?s father. Daughters Prishna, age 19, Rena, age 19 months (Prishna?s daughter), and Rosemary?s youngest child Juliette, age 16. We were told that Grandmother Rosemary?s husband could not join us as he was in the fields of another village digging and working the family crops.

To make a better life for herself and her family Baby Harriett?s mother, Sheila, age 20, left her daughter with her boyfriend and his mother to finish school for nursing. As commendable as this decision is, Sheila?s absence has left Baby Harriett without the proper nutrition she needs through breastfeeding. In the country of Uganda, babies only have two choices, breast milk or regular cow?s milk as baby formula is not readily available and expensive.

We followed Grandmother Rosemary, which is difficult to say because she?s so young, to her Catholic mass service where we were able to see the Kabarole Village worship experience. The beauty of this day is that it was coupled with Healthy Family Health Day, which is a clever way to capture citizens to receive life-saving immunizations.

In Uganda, churches are literally everywhere. But health clinics and hospitals are scarce. So UNICEF decided to bring their immunization, birth registry, nutrition screenings and HIV/AIDS testing to houses of worship all across the country. They bring in health care workers and supplies reaching more than 19,000 families in 2011. That number continues to increase as the word spreads abut these FREE services.

Immediately following the worship service, parishioners made their way to a room just across the parking lot to take advantage of the services. This is where we watched Baby Harriett receive her immunizations. But the toughest moment to watch was the nurse checking little Harriett to determine if she was malnourished. Sadly, the band on her frail arms could nearly wrap around twice. Baby Harriett was confirmed to be in the red, danger zone. I watched and cried, feeling so emotional that her young life was now hanging in the balance, but grateful that her grandmother was concerned enough about her health to bring her in for treatment. In Uganda, 21% of children under age 5 are underweight in the poorest communities, versus 8% in the riches communities.

The awareness campaigns and fundraising from champions and organizations like Shootie Girl and Mocha Moms, Inc. , a national non-profit for stay at home mothers of color, make it possible for precious children like Baby Harriett to receive this type of care when families can not otherwise afford it.

After seeing Grandmother Rosemary and Bay Harriett off, our day continued with a group of Kabarole Village mothers and their beautiful children. We sat down to dialogue about what life is like for them as mothers. Of the 7 moms who joined us, 4 of them had lost at least one child.

image

The story of Valeria, widowed mother of 12 and now a grandmother, lost twins boys at birth. But she also lost her daughter to dysentery (blood stools and diarrhea) at the young age of 10. An epidemic broke out in the community and Emelda was not immunized. 1.5 million children die each year in developing countries from conditions like diarrhea, which can be easily prevented with vaccinations.

image

Although it feels like we live a world away, the group of mothers (Margaret #1, Margaret #2, Violet, Agnes, Fatima, Jenny and Valeria) are more similar to American moms than we are different. They have the same concerns and dreams for their children. They want to see them safe, healthy, educated and productive citizens.

I was also happy to hear that all but one of the women was married with a supportive family intact, which dispels the myth that African or African-American men leave their families after children are born.

I can not tell you how eye-opening this day was. What an amazing gift to share time with women who prove that the word MOTHER is universal in every way.

What are your dreams for your children?

Fossil suggests Lucy's kin swung from trees

Despite the ability to walk upright, early relatives of humanity represented by the famed "Lucy" fossil likely spent much of their time in trees, remaining very active climbers, researchers say.

Humans are unique among living primates in that walking bipedally ? on two feet ? is their chief mode of locomotion. This upright posture freed their hands up for using tools, one of the key factors behind humans' domination of the planet.

Among the earliest-known relatives of humanity definitely known to walk upright was Australopithecus afarensis, the species including the famed 3.2-million-year-old "Lucy." Australopithecines are the leading candidates for direct ancestors of the human lineage, living about 2.9 million to 3.8 million years ago in East Africa.

Although Lucy and her kin were no knuckle-draggers, experts have hotly debated whether australopithecines also spent much of their time in trees. Uncovering the answer to this question could shed light on the evolutionary forces that shaped the human lineage.

"When looking at how we became human, an important moment in our history was abandoning a lifestyle in the trees, and when that happened is a big question," researcher Zeresenay Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist at the California Academy of Sciences, told LiveScience.

To help resolve this controversy, scientists have for the first time comprehensively analyzed two complete shoulder blades from the fossil "Selam," an exceptionally well-preserved skeleton of a 3-year-old A. afarensis girl dating back 3.3 million years from Dikika, Ethiopia. The arms and shoulders can yield insights on how well they performed at climbing. [ See Photos of Early Human 'Selam' Fossils ]

"This study moves us a step closer toward answering the question 'When did our ancestors abandon climbing behavior?'" said Alemseged, who discovered Selam in 2000. "It appears that this happened much later than many researchers have previously suggested."

Shoulder blades tell a tale
Researchers spent 11 years carefully extracting Selam's two shoulder blades from the rest of the skeleton, which was encased in a sandstone block. "Because shoulder blades are paper-thin, they rarely fossilize, and when they do, they are almost always fragmentary," Alemseged said. "So finding both shoulder blades completely intact and attached to a skeleton of a known and pivotal species was like hitting the jackpot."

The researchers found that these bones had several details in common with those of modern apes, suggesting they lived part of the time in trees. For instance, the socket for the shoulder joint was pointed upward in both Selam and today's apes, a sign of an active climber. In humans, these sockets face out to the sides.

Lucy's adult shoulder sockets also faced upward, suggesting that, like modern apes, her species was equipped for tree-climbing throughout its life span. Humans, on the other hand, are born with a somewhat downward-facing socket that gradually moves to face outward as people mature.

"The question as to whether Australopithecus afarensis was strictly bipedal or if they also climbed trees has been intensely debated for more than 30 years," researcher David Green at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Ill., said in a statement. "These remarkable fossils provide strong evidence that these individuals were still climbing at this stage in human evolution."

At the same time, most researchers agree that many traits of the A. afarensis hip bone, lower limb, and foot are unequivocally humanlike and adapted for upright walking.

"This new find confirms the pivotal place that Lucy and Selam's species occupies in human evolution," Alemseged said. "While bipedal like humans, A. afarensis was still a capable climber. Though not fully human, A. afarensis was clearly on its way."

"The skeleton of Selam is a gold mine of scientific information," Alemseged added. "We think it will continue to be so as we go further with preparation and cleaning work."

Green and Alemseged detailed their findings in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

wordpress Wordpress For The Business Owner

When you bring your business online the first thing you'll need is a website. The top choice of over 10,000 sites on the Intra-net is WordPress. The most influential people and companies in the world are using WordPress. No small wonder it's the most universal online publishing platform in the world.?

Maybe you didn't realize that eBay, Oprah and even the Whitehouse uses WordPress for their website. Just take one look at the thousands of companies listed at http://www.wordpress.org and you'll see that if you aren't built in WordPress-?you'll want to switch fast!

I've had clients tell me that some web designers and graphic designers advised them against WordPress. The only reason this would occur is if a person didn't know how to edit and refine WordPress. Years ago the best websites made were rich in graphics, filled with flash movies, bells and whistles! Now you run a great risk with a site like this because Google doesn't like you when it spiders for organic traffic. Flash is NOT recognizable by Google's robots and graphics that are more than 1/3 of the entire site are not crawled for higher organic listings and search engine optimization. Most of the time they are demoted and even ignored.

But once you get past the overly technical website jargon and the threats from graphics designers that you'll lose a ton of money I'll tell you this- if you don't get into WordPress you will KICK yourself in less than a years time. Mark my words. Just remember this- do NOT use the free websites found at?http://www.wordpress.com?for your company or you'll be legislated by WordPress and that's not a good thing. Instead, have WordPress installed to your own domain so you are a privately owned website that can sell what you want, say what you want and do what you want.

Now that you're ready to take the jump here are a few critical things to do immediately. Choosing a theme is the first thing you'll want to do once you decide to move to a WordPress site. After helping my clients? port over to WordPress and teaching thousands of people how to use WordPress profitably I've found a few themes that out-rank them all.

You'll want a theme that can connect nicely to Social Media channels, allow you to show several archives on the first page, have options to edit the sidebars and page widths and to do a few custom edits.

Thesis?is the top of the line when it comes to SEO rich websites. It?s a theme that is built to make money with. Organic traffic, social media connections, hidden private pages, memberships and more can exist beautifully in Thesis. Our entire site at:?http://www.arealchange.com/blog?is built in Thesis.?

But what if you want a colorful theme, one that matches your message and you don?t want to pay someone for that or attempt to figure it out yourself. That?s ok too! Here are some tips on what to look for in a good theme.

  • Look for a theme that enables customization of the header
  • Be sure that you can have hidden pages
  • You?ll want to be able to change sidebars and table widths on the page
  • Get a theme that is not showing up on 100+ other sites
  • Find something that represents YOU, not anything else

I hope these tips have been helpful!

The fun thing about themes is this- if you do choose something and want to change, you can. Just be sure to always back up your files before doing so. WordPress is so versatile that you are never stuck in the mud, waiting on a graphics designer or some other expert to pull you out.?It?s the tool everyone can use!

Katy Perry sings for Obama at Las Vegas rally

By Tina Daunt, The Hollywood Reporter

After a multistate tour on Wednesday, President Barack Obama wrapped up his day with a late-evening campaign rally headlined by singer Katy Perry at a park in Las Vegas.

Perry, wearing a dress that looked like a giant ballot, warmed up the crowd as the president traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for the free gathering, which drew more about 13,000 people. The singer performed "Let's Stay Together," "Part of Me," "Teenage Dream," "Wide Awake" and "Firework."

Air Force One touched down a little after 9 p.m.

"The motorcade sped on a highway and arrived at Doolittle Park, a site in a largely African-American section of town," according to the pool report. "There, a large and enthusiastic crowd awaited him. An Obama 'Forward!' sign stood at the top of the stands behind the stage where Obama spoke. To the side giant white letters spelling 'Vote Early' stood atop the stands to the side of the stage."

Obama's Las Vegas speech mirrored the ones he delivered earlier in Davenport and Denver -- but with one major exception. Perry's 91-year-old grandmother was there and gave the president a kiss on the cheek, leaving a lipstick mark on his face. He joked that he had to wipe it off before First Lady Michelle Obama saw it.

"He told the crowd about being in the midst of a marathon tour and ticked off all the stops," according to the pool report. "He said he was pulling an all-nighter, adding that if you're not going to sleep, 'You might as well be in Vegas.'"

The event took place not long after Obama taped an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," where he blasted Republican Senate?candidate Richard Mourdock's rape comments and poked fun at Donald Trump.

Scientists target bacterial transfer of resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? The bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae -- which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia and sepsis -- likes to share its antibiotic-defeating weaponry with its neighbors. Individual cells can pass resistance genes to one another through a process called horizontal gene transfer, or by "transformation," the uptake of DNA from the environment.

Now researchers report that they can interrupt the cascade of cellular events that allows S. pneumoniae to swap or suck up DNA. The new findings, reported in the journal PLoS ONE, advance the effort to develop a reliable method for shutting down the spread of drug resistance in bacteria.

"Within the last few decades, S. pneumoniae has developed resistance to several classes of antibiotics," said University of Illinois pathobiology professor Gee Lau, who led the study. "Importantly, it has been shown that antibiotic stress -- the use of antibiotics to treat an infection -- can actually induce the transfer of resistance genes among S. pneumoniae. Our approach inhibits resistance gene transfer in all strains of S. pneumoniae, and does so without increasing selective pressure and without increasing the likelihood that resistant strains will become dominant."

Lau and his colleagues focused on blocking a protein that, when it binds to a receptor in the bacterial cell membrane, spurs a series of events in the cell that makes the bacterium "competent" to receive new genetic material. The researchers hypothesized that interfering with this protein (called CSP) would hinder its ability to promote gene transfer.

In previous work published late last year in the journal PLoS Pathogens, Lau's team identified proteins that could be made in the lab that were structurally very similar to the CSP proteins. These artificial CSPs can dock with the membrane receptors, block the bacterial CSPs' access to the receptors and reduce bacterial competence, as well as reducing the infectious capacity of S. pneumoniae.

In the new study, the researchers fine-tuned the amino acid structure of more than a dozen artificial CSPs and tested how well they inhibited the S. pneumoniae CSPs. They also tested their ability (or, more desirably, their inability) to mimic the activity of CSPs in bacterial cells.

"The chemical properties of individual amino acids in a protein can greatly influence the protein's activity," Lau said.

The team identified several artificial CSPs that both inhibited the bacterial CSPs and reduced S. pneumoniae competence by more than 90 percent.

"This strategy will likely help us reduce the spread of antibiotic-resistance genes among S. pneumoniae and perhaps other species of streptococcus bacteria," Lau said.

The study team included researchers from Sun-Yat-Sen University in Guangdong, China. The National Institutes of Health and the University of Illinois Research Board Arnold O. Beckman Research Endowment partially supported this work.

Abundance: 6 Reasons Why You're Not Getting What You Want in Life

Why aren?t you getting the abundance you want in life?

I am open to receive

Have you been repeating affirmations and visualizing your abundance, to no avail?

So many of us struggle with getting what we want in our lives.

Most people want the same things; great health, loving relationships, spiritual growth, a satisfying career and stable finances.

None of these desires are unachievable or extraordinary in any way so, why do so many people try over and over and get no where?

I get email every day asking for answers to: ?Why am I not getting what I want in my life?

This is what motivated me to start the Create Your Abundance Now! workshop series. I want to share what I?ve learned through my research and using my own life as a laboratory for the last three decades, and see you create the abundance and life you desire.

When the film, ?The Secret,? came out in 2006 I was glad to see the teaching that, we create our reality with our thoughts going mainstream. What I was unhappy about was that it focused only on one spiritual principle, ?the law of attraction,? to the exclusion of all the others.

There are numerous universal principles and sub-principles whose numbers change according to who you read.? After years of searching through many? confusing and arcane texts I found Raymond Holliwell, author of the 1939 classic, ?Working With the Law: 11 Truth Principles for Successful Living. ?

Holliwel?s book clearly explains the other universal principles aside from the law of attraction, and how you create what you experience in life. I recommend it.

Here are the 6 most common reasons you don?t manifest what you want in life:

1. Unclear about what you want. If you are not clear, always changing your mind or choose something because you believe it is the ?right thing? rather than what your heart desires, your ability to manifest will be handicapped.

The antidote: Become crystal clear about what you want. Write down your goal and describe it. Know what your life will look like and what you feel like when you manifest your desire. Do not be ashamed of what you want and substitute something else because you feel embarrassed.

2. Unresolved emotional issues. If you haven?t worked on self-love issues such as unworthiness and not feeling ?good enough? they will undermine your ability to manifest. My friend Evelyn Lim has written an excellent book, ?Self-Love Secrets,? that I highly recommend.

The antidote: Do some work on yourself to uncover the negative messages you absorbed when you were in your formative years and release them. Emotional catches are like splinters sticking out of the paneling that pull your sweater when you walk by. How can you feel good when you?re constantly being ?pulled? like this? When you feel bad you will not resonate to the good you desire. You?ve got to ?feel good? about yourself to manifest your good.

3. Fears. If you fear change, being in the spot-light by becoming success or the shame of failure this too will hold you back from achieving your goals.

The Antidote: Embrace change. Often change is brought about by problems. When we face the problem and overcome it we grow more confident in our ability to deal with challenges. The confidence that comes with experience is also how we overcome fear of failure and success. You have to fail once in a while to not only learn what works but, to know that it is not the end of the world.

4. False beliefs. If you believe that there is ?only so much to go round? or that abundance is difficult to attain you will push away the very things you desire.

The antidote: Listen to the voices in your head. Are they critical and negative? Are the yours or are they remnants of voices you heard growing up from parents and authority figures? Many times our lives run on unconscious beliefs. Look back and see if you absorbed a false belief such as money is the root of all evil,? and work on replacing these thoughts with something more constructive.

5. Withholding forgiveness. If you cannot let go of the past and forgive you will block new good from entering your life.

The antidote: Forgive, let go of the past and live with gratitude for the present. Past hurts that remain unhealed are like black holes that suck in our energy and joy like a vacuum. When we read that forgiveness is not for the other person but, for ourselves this is the reason. Forgive and let go to move on in life.

6. Ingratitude. When we focus only on what we don?t have ? we skew our perception of life from noticing abundance to seeing only lack.

The antidote: Gratitude. Focus on what you have now and give thanks for that. The more you notice the good in your life the more your abundance will grow. Keeping an abundance journal is a great way to train your mind to notice all the things you have to be grateful for.

This is only a short list of some of the reasons we don?t get what we want. There are more to be sure.

Consumer sentiment jumps to 5-year high

By Reuters

U.S. consumer sentiment unexpectedly rose to its highest in five years in October in the latest in a string of encouraging signs from the economy that may boost President Barack Obama's re-election hopes next month.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary October reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 83.1, up from 78.3 the month before, and the highest since September 2007, the survey showed on Friday.

The new buoyancy among consumers comes shortly after the U.S. unemployment rate tumbled to its lowest in nearly four years in September as more people returned to the workforce and found jobs than economists had predicted.

"We are getting some quite interesting signals from consumer sentiment and employment data - both (the) unemployment rate and initial claims - that there has been some quite significant improvement in the economy," said David Sloan, an economist at 4Cast in New York.

Economic issues have been a battleground in the election campaign as Obama seeks to burnish his credentials as a competent manager of the economy while Republican challenger Mitt Romney has faulted Obama's record on job creation and growth. Friday's sentiment report was the last before the November 6 general election and will be welcomed by Democrats.

"That kind of boost in consumer sentiment benefits an incumbent without question," said Julia Clark, a pollster with Ipsos in Washington. "The challenge that the Republicans have is continuing to attack the government's credibility on this issue while we actually are seeing data that suggest that consumer sentiment is improving."

The sentiment reading was well above the median forecast for a slight decline to 78 among economists polled by Reuters as consumers felt better about the economy overall.

U.S. stocks were higher after the news but turned lower by midday as equities struggle to make headway after recently climbing to highs not seen in five years.

October's unexpected jump in sentiment came as consumers felt better about the economy in both the long and the short term, the compilers of the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey said.

"What changed was how they (consumers) evaluated economic conditions," survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement. "Economic conditions during the year ahead were expected to be 'good' by more consumers, and more consumers expected 'good' economic times over the next five years."

The survey's gauge of consumer expectations jumped to 79.5 from 73.5, well above an expected reading of 74. Expectations were at their highest since July 2007.

The survey's barometer of current economic conditions rose to 88.6 from 85.7 and was above a forecast of 86.

As well as September's employment report there have been a number of other encouraging indications from the economy, including stabilizing house prices, and last month's expansionary reading for the U.S. manufacturing sector after three months of contraction.

Also on Friday, The Economic Cycle Research Institute, a New York-based independent forecasting group, said its measure of future U.S. economic expansion pushed higher last week, while the annualized growth rate rose to its loftiest in more than a year.

The institute said its Weekly Leading Index increased to 127.7 last week from a revised 126.2 the previous week. The index's annualized growth rate accelerated to its highest level since May 2011 at 5.7 percent from 4.6 percent.

In another positive sign for the housing sector, both JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo posted record profit on Friday as a recovery in the housing market this year boosted mortgage lending at both banks.

"We believe the housing market has turned the corner," JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said in a statement.

But the trajectory of the U.S. economy is still uncertain. Much of Europe is mired in recession and the Chinese economy has slowed. A recent Reuters poll found that while economists have stopped cutting their U.S. growth outlook as aggressively as in recent months, they still see just 2.1 percent growth this year and only 2 percent next year.

A separate report showed U.S. producer prices rose more than expected in September as the cost of gasoline surged, but underlying inflation pressures were muted in a sign the Federal Reserve has room to carry out its new monetary stimulus program.

"If you take out food and energy you are essentially looking at a number that didn't go anywhere and was actually probably a little weaker than expected," said Cary Leahey, an economist at Decision Economics in New York.

"These kinds of energy prices are debilitating to the economy and it is one of the reasons why we haven't been able to get any kind of a glide speed above a 2 percent annual (growth) rate."

The Labor Department said on Friday its seasonally adjusted Producer Price Index increased 1.1 percent last month. Economists polled by Reuters had expected prices at farms, factories and refineries to rise 0.7 percent after climbing 1.7 percent in August.

The Labor Department's report chimed with the sentiment survey that showed consumers' one-year inflation expectations fell to 3.1 percent from 3.3 percent, while the survey's five-to-10-year inflation outlook hit its lowest since March 2009, falling to 2.6 percent from 2.8 percent.

Exclusive: EU insurers strip cover from ships storing Iran oil

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Two European insurers have withdrawn cover for tankers involved in the Iranian oil trade, the first such move since tough new sanctions were imposed in July, documents obtained by Reuters show.

The tankers, operated by Hong Kong's Titan Petrochemicals Group Ltd, were used to store Iranian oil for top oil trader Vitol and little known shipping firm Glammarine, Reuters reported previously.

While the European Union sanctions bar Western-based insurers from covering tankers that carry, rather than store, Iranian oil, the documents show the insurers were not prepared to risk falling foul of the curbs.

"Titan's conduct breaches the spirit if not the wording of U.S. and EU sanctions against Iran," a September 14 document quoted Mike Salthouse, director of North Insurance Management, as saying on behalf of the North of England P&I Association, Titan's main insurer.

"Were the Association to continue to provide insurance to the Titan fleet we have concluded that there would be a high probability of further breaches of sanctions," it said.

Gard, the world's second-largest marine insurer, also dropped the shipping and oil storage company, according to a September 7 document from the insurer to Titan. It had covered one of the firm's floating oil storage vessels.

Both European insurers declined to comment.

Titan must now find new insurers to continue operating its floating storage business off Malaysia, one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. That could prove difficult if other Western-based insurers, which cover around 90 percent of the world's tanker fleet, also decide to shut Titan out.

Titan officials could not be reached for comment.

The company's floating oil storage business generated more than $64 million in revenue last year, about a fifth of Titan's total revenue, according to the firm's annual results. Titan hires the floating storage vessels under long-term contracts with independent shipowners such as Norway's Frontline.

Frontline, the world's largest independent oil tanker operator, has withdrawn the charter for at least one of Titan's fleet due to the ship's involvement in the Iranian oil trade, a Frontline official told Reuters.

Heavy with debt and with five straight years of losses, Titan is being sold to Chinese oil trader Guangdong Zhenrong Energy Co Ltd, whose parent, Zhuhai Zhenrong, is blacklisted by the United States as the biggest supplier of refined petroleum products to Iran.

Titan is locked in a legal battle with U.S. buyout fund Warburg Pincus, which holds a stake of around 10 percent in the shipper. New York-based Warburg has ploughed $215 million into Titan since 2007 in an unprofitable investment, and has filed a petition to wind up the company through the Bermuda courts.

Published on October 11, 2012 by pmnews ????? 1 Comment

Indications emerged on Thursday that many applicants who applied for entry into Nigerian Universities for the 2012\ 2013 session would not realize their ambition as the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board declared that only 10 out of the nation?s 71 Universities may likely meet the 31st October, 2012 admission deadline for the 2012\2013 academic session.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde ?made this known at a meeting in Abuja between the Minister of Education and management of the tertiary institutions, to review the preparedness of the institutions ahead of the October deadline.

In view of the development, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, issued a Seven day ultimatum to all the institutions to meet with the relevant admission and regulatory agencies to iron out their challenges ahead of the deadline.

Out of the 71 institutions invited for the meeting, including Colleges of Education and Polytechnics, only 31 of them attended, raising concern over their ability to meet the October 31st admission deadline, with the fate of hundred of candidates hanging on the balance.

Association Of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Awards Highest Honors

Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers

Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers

NEW BUFFALO, MICH -?The Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) awarded its highest honors to five recipients at their recent annual conference in Branson, Missouri.

Golden Glow awards were presented in the Individual, Public Servant, Organization, Company/Corporation and Excellence-In-Craft categories during the Chevy Trucks Golden Glow Banquet at Chateau on the Lake to Curt Hicken, Illinois Fisheries Biologist Ken Russell, Clam Outdoors, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and Bobby Whitehead, respectively.

Hicken Receives Golden Glow Individual Award
For nearly three decades, outdoor writer and broadcaster Curt Hicken has played an integral, innovative and active role in the outdoor communication world.

Beginning in the late 1980s, he began writing a weekly outdoor column for several Illinois newspapers and airing an outdoors program on WSMI, now one of the longest running outdoor radio shows in Illinois.

By the early 1990s, Curt?s work expanded with writings regularly appearing in nearly every regional outdoor magazine in the Midwest. It was a rare month, indeed, if you could pick up any one of these publications and not find his byline.

During this time he was also named as the outdoor writer for The Telegraph (Alton, Illinois), providing it with two outdoor pages per week, for more than 15 years. Tough times have reduced the effort to one page per week, but the job has been expanded to include the- another Freedom Newspaper Publication. His byline can also be found in the Jacksonville Journal-Courier and such fine regional outdoor magazines as Outdoor Guide and Heartland Outdoors, in addition to having appeared in every Illinois Game and Fish since 1989.

In 2000, Curt set aside only some of his writing assignments to come to the assistance of AGLOW, and served it well and admirably for more than nine years. Under his steady and easy hand, the organization thrived and reached new heights, moving from antiquated ways into the modern media world. Thanks to his efforts, it is now highly esteemed and one of the finest groups of its kind in the nation.

Many awards and much recognition for his work followed, and his name is now widely recognized throughout the outdoor industry. He is still writing, broadcasting and serving others at a fast pace. Among many endeavors, he has served many youth outdoors education programs, and, of course, he continues to hunt, fish, write, photograph and broadcast on a faster-than-ever scale and spending quality time with wife Jeanie in their home at Gillespie, Illinois.

Illinois Fisheries Biologist Ken Russell Receives Public Servant Golden Glow Award
After graduating college in Missouri, Ken Russell joined the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (then Dept. of Conservation) on November 1 1962 as a District Fisheries Biologist.

Ken quickly achieved a reputation as a superior fish management biologist, particularly in the areas of small impoundments and strip mine lakes. He participated in the original AFS multi-state small pond management study, and has written and taught small impoundment techniques throughout his career.

Ken recently re-wrote Management of Small Lakes and Ponds in Illinois. Ken has had a long and very productive relationship with Western Illinois University, and has mentored numerous graduate students on small impoundment research projects, and species-specific (he?s also a panfish expert) management research. He has been involved in over 1,000 educational workshops for the public and has been involved in or the subject of countless popular articles. Each year Ken speaks to thousands of kids at Envirothons, Conservation Days, fishing expos, fishing derbies, scouting events, school assemblies and individual classes.

What is striking about this is the intensity Ken brings to his educational work. Many have watched Ken drop to his knees to get at ?kid level? and teach. After 49+ years on the job, the ecological fire in his gut still bums very brightly, and he is determined to make the most out of every educational opportunity. Ken could have retired with full benefits many years ago, but still gives 110 % to the resources and people he serves.

Ken has been honored with awards from countless Sportsmen?s groups, county conservation offices, newspapers, and professional societies. One example of awards is the prestigious Spirit of the Shack Award from the Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. This award is given to the person who best personifies the conservation ethic of Aldo Leopold. Another example is the Stephen A. Forbes Excellence in Fisheries Science Award that Ken received from the Illinois Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

He has made an indelible mark on Illinois with his management activities. He has made another lasting mark with the thousands of people he has presented conservation principles and ethics to, and still another mark has been made with all of the young professionals that Ken has mentored and who are working today.

National Shooting Sports Foundation Receives Organization Golden Glow Award
Following a series of industry meetings in the late 1950s sponsored by Field & Stream magazine, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) was chartered in 1961 to promote a better understanding of and a greater participation in hunting and the shooting sports.

Recognizing the growing urbanization of America, NSSF?s first efforts sought to build public awareness of the sportsman?s role in conservation, and the contributions of our system of wildlife management through landmark efforts such as the annual National Hunting and Fishing Day, established in 1973.

Over the years, the foundation has continued its public outreach efforts while also developing a wide array of programs to encourage new and added participation in hunting and the target shooting sports. In the early 1980s, NSSF was in the forefront of promoting the then new sport of sporting clays and generating widespread publicity for shooting games of all kinds.

Kicked-off in 1988, ?Sportsman?s Team Challenge,? for example, was the first made-for-TV shooting competition appearing on ESPN through the 1990s.

Over the past several decades, NSSF has greatly expanded its efforts to strengthen our hunting and shooting sports traditions through nationally based efforts such as STEP OUTSIDE, our Families Afield initiative, FIRST SHOTS and Hunting Heritage Partnership which provides grants to our state wildlife agencies for programs that improve access and opportunity.

Since its inception, NSSF has been a leader in building opportunities for the next generation to enjoy hunting and the shooting sports. NSSF has long been a major supporter of the nation?s youth shooting programs as well as creating its own programs such as the Scholastic Clay Target Program and similar efforts at the collegiate level.

Firearms safety education has also been a fundamental mission of NSSF throughout its history. Over the decades, the foundation has distributed many millions of safety brochures, and delivered our safety messages on television, radio and in print. Initiated in 1999, NSSF?s Project ChildSafe has now distributed more than 35 million firearm safety kits in all 50 states.

In its modern era, the NSSF has become actively engaged in representing our members in respect to key legal, regulatory and legislative issues through its Government Relations division. Since 1979, critical funding for NSSF?s many programs and activities has come from the NSSF owned industry trade show, the SHOT SHOW. From an inaugural event of 50,000 square feet of exhibit space, the show has grown to some 630,000 square feet of exhibit space today and is the largest trade exposition of its kind in the world.

Since its founding in 1961, the foundation has sought to represent the broad scope of the hunting and shooting sports industry. Members include manufacturers of sporting firearms and ammunition, a wide array of accessory and equipment manufacturers as well as distributors, retailers, shooting ranges and many other companies and organizations in the hunting and shooting sports community. Today, membership includes more than 7,000 companies and organizations.

NSSF?s Director of Communications, Bill Brassard, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

Clam Outdoors Receives Company/Corporation Golden Glow Award
The ice fishing industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few decades and Minneapolis-based Clam Outdoors has been one of the most integral parts of the sport from the beginning of modern ice fishing to today. Their ongoing dedication to being the leader in new technology and gear has carried them to the forefront of the sport.

Clam Corporation, now known as Clam Outdoors, actually started as two separate entities that were molded into one because of the vision of two ice fishing pioneers. Dave Genz built the first Fish Trap in his garage in 1980. His wife, Patsy, sewed the canvas pieces together on her home sewing machine.

A total of five were assembled. Over the next five years, production increased from five to eighty, and eventually to a few hundred. Eventually, Patsy was relieved of her sewing duties and the ice shelters were professionally sewn. Genz?s original model is now the standard in the industry for all flip-over ice shelters and CLAMCORP still proudly sells the re-designed and updated original favorite. In the late ?80?s Dennis Clark, operating as Frontier Enterprises began marketing the popular Clam ice fishing shelter that ? like the Fish Trap ? allowed anglers to shed their stationary shelters for the portability of a mobile shelter. Frontier Enterprises, because of their rapid growth became part of the USL Corporation.

In 1993 with the rapid growth of the ice fishing industry, USL ? with their brands of Clam & Fish Trap ? was recognized by the trade as the largest manufacturer of ice shelters in North America.

In 2003 Clam Corporation was formed when Dave Osborne purchases it from USL Products. Now a privately held company, Clam focuses its efforts on becoming the leading innovator of products for the ice fishing industry. Ice Armor, a new line of clothing, is introduced soon after Osborne takes over. This cold weather outerwear is built specifically for the demands of ice fishing. The product line was launched with the ?Blue Suit?, which becomes hugely popular and a benchmark for all outerwear to follow.

In 2005 CLAMCORP trademarks their distinctive color of blue on Fish Trap and The Clam, making the color exclusive to their ice shelters. In 2006 the Fish Trap X-series of ice shelters debuts as ?the best portable ice fishing shelters ever built?.

Shortly thereafter the CLAMCORP engineers use Thermal Trap insulation in creating Fish Trap Thermal X icefishing shelters. The Thermal X Fish Trap is tested and shown to be 28 degrees warmer than comparably sized and heated shelters lacking this new insulation. Thermal Trap is engineered into other products, too, such as Ice Armor X Gloves and Mitts and the improved Extreme Weather suit.

Never resting on their position in the ice fishing market CLAMCORP introduced 13 new models of shelters for the 2009 ? 2010 ice fishing season as well as a wide array of accessories for ice fishing. The new accessory line-up includes the Dave Genz line-up of ice fishing combos, ice fishing line and a new jig box to keep your tackle neatly organized. The IceArmor brand continues its expansion with the introduction of several new outerwear items including a Red/Gray Xtreme suit in women?s and youth sizing, insulated and un-insulated bibs as well as new headwear and boots.

In 2011 Dave Genz was inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Angler, a testament to his leadership in the movement that modernized ice fishing. His passion and innovation for the sport of ice fishing with the support of other visionaries such as Dennis Clark and Dave Osborne are reason enough to award CLAMCORP the Golden Glow Company or Corporation Award. Clam Outdoors? Director of Marketing, Nick Chiodo, accepted the award along with Dave Genz, Jason Mitchell and Jeff Anderson.

Missouri Publisher and Editor Bobby Whitehead Receives Golden Glow for Excellence-In-Craft
It takes a lot of words to properly span the journalistic career and list the many accomplishments of Bob (Bobby) Whitehead. Among all the editors of outdoor recreational publications in the nation, his name and efforts stand out with an ?excellent? rating.

As editor and publisher of Outdoor Guide Magazine, he probably works with more writers and photographers that any of his peers. Add quickly, too, that they respect his knowledge of the field, and admire the progress he has made with that prestigious publication.

Name an outdoor media organization and it?s a good bet that he is not only a member, but has served it wisely and admirably in many capacities. He was elected to membership in AGLOW in 1992, and served three years on its board before becoming vice president, then president in 2010. He is a charter member of the Missouri Outdoor Communicators (MOC), and has served it in many capacities, including two terms as president. In addition he is a member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA), Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), Southeastern Outdoor Press Association (SEOPA) and Midwest Travel Writers Association (MTWA). Born in St. Louis, MO, where he works, Whitehead has accomplished more in his 59 years than most journalists can claim in a lifetime. A graduate of the fine University of Missouri School of Journalism, he has spent more than 35 years in the media field. First, he worked for Missouri Life Magazine, then the St. Louis Globe Democrat. He has been outdoors editor of the St. Louis /Southern Illinois Labor Tribune, the largest labor publication in the nation, for 25 years.
