SALINAS, Calif.-?It's a snapshot of family life in the?agricultural town of Salinas in the 1870s and?it tells the story of transportation and the development of the Salinas Valley.
In a news release Wednesday, the Salinas non-profit organization said grant funding, including a media grant from KION's One Million Dollar Community Investment Campaign,?helped bring the First Mayor's House one step closer to realizing its dreams.
Its mission is to bring the past to life for the benefit of local school children. The First Mayor's House, also known as the I. J. Harvey house, was home to Salinas' First Mayor, Isaac Julian Harvey, his wife Sarah and their children: Absalom "Benton", Sophorina, Eleanor "Josephine" and the youngest, Mabel.
Today, it is one of only ten homes that still exist from early Salinas and it is the only one that operates as a museum and cultural heritage center to interpret the early history of Salinas for local school children.
The organization is the recent recipient of four grants that will support its educational programs to develop strategies making it possible for elementary teachers throughout Salinas/Monterey to improve student's reading, thinking, and writing skills using the primary resource materials at the First Mayor's House and adjacent Historic Railroad Exhibit.
